If you mean Works word processor documents, and the Word part of Office,
then you need the filter appropriate to the version of Works to open the
document in Word. The older Works filters are linked from the downloads page
of my web site. The recent ones are included with Word. Alternatively you
can save from recent versions of Works as RTF/Word Document.
I hope you are more polite to your course tutor.
