Working Remotely

Dennis

I want to connect to my office PC (Windows XP
Professional) through my home PC (Windows XP Home), but
am at a loss as to how to accomplish it. The Windows XP
help files are misnamed, providing general information
but no real help. Is there anyone out there with
experience in this area that can advise me? Office
computer is on DSL. Home computer uses 56K modem, but if
I can get this to work, I will upgrade to DSL. Thanks.

For Remote Desktop help look at these pages...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gomobile/remotedesktop/default.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/focuson/remotedesktop.asp

If your office PC is behind a firewall/NAT/router have the network administrators forward TCP Port
3389 to the target PCs private LAN IP address. Call using the public IP of the firewall/NAT/router.

If you want to setup a VPN look at these pages...Note you can run Remote Desktop through the VPN
tunnel if you wish.

For a PPTP VPN link forward TCP Port 1723 and make sure the firewall/NAT/router can pass GRE
Protocol 47 traffic. Some firewall/NAT/routers pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic by enabling "PPTP Pass
Through" or "VPN Pass Through". Again talk to the network administrators about this...
