Working on a table. I can't undo the highlighting

I'm typing in a table. I highlighted to make a change. It won't allow me to
make changes or move around in the table without highlighting the whole
table.

I've been looking at this for a couple of days now, and I still don't get any
light-bulbs. Doesn't sound familiar at all...

Which version of Word is this?

Are you seeing the problem in only one document, or in all (new) documents?

Is there anything unusual about these tables? (Are they in some kind of box,
copied from some other program, anything?)

Or perhaps the whole table is a field of some sort? With automatic field
selection enabled?
