when switchig from workgroup to domain with same user name, is a new profile
still made on the user machine or is the existing one kept.

A workgroup account is a local account which is different from a domain
account. If you switch to a workgroup first, the local admin account is the
only valid account on the machine. If you create the local account first,
then switch, both the local admin account and the local user account are
valid.

Thank you for your prompt response, I still am not clear. If I have an
account/profile on the local machine called FRANK and have been working on a
workgroup then change from a workgroup setting to a domain (and the domain
has a user called FRANK) when I log on to the domain as FRANK will it retain
the local profile and all its settings (desktop, mydocumets etc.)(assuming
roaming profiles are not used) or will it creat a new profile folder?

Sorry, if you go from local (workgroup) to domain, the new domain account
profile will be created on the machine. This account will have a separate
desktop, my documents, etc.

Thanx
