Hi!

My company wants to setup an new IT infrastructure with active
directory. Our actual IT consits of a novell 5.1 nds tree. The clients
are all Windows XP with SP2 with no membership in a domain. They
reside in the "Workgroup". Now i got the job to migrate this clients
(600) from the workgroup to the new active directory. There exists a
tool from Microsoft named "netdom". Some people on the inet say, that
ist doesn't work for clients who are in a workgroup. Is this true,
exist other options to do this?

The other task is to migrate the user profiles. When the user logs on
to the new active directory infrastructure, they should find their old
settings, like desktopwallpaper and so on. My research covered the
"Microsoft User State Migration Tool". This program looks good, does
this work for us, when it is used on the same pc (User Workgroup to
User Domain)?

I hope someone could give me little help. Thank you.

So long

Gregor

Netdom should work, with the windows 2003 resource kit version

Where is this stored at the moment? It's been a while since I've looked at
Netware, I admit, but aren't the user profile details stored on the user's
home network share, along with the account in NDS, so they can roam and
login to any machine they have access to?

The user settings and files (profiles) will NOT be preserved on joining a
domain - this is one of the main headaches of creating domains for existing
computers.

Basically, you need to:
Rename the profile-folders before the transfer
Do the domain-transfer.
Log each domain-user on once then off again
Delete the empty profile this creates
Rename the original profile back
Change its ownership and rights to the new user (because SID now differs)
Do a test logon as the new user.
