Workgroup vs Domain

I'm working with a department which is running workgroups
and has been happy. Their primary application is running
SQL Server on a 2000 Server and the network consists of
approximately 50 workstations. I've convinced them that
they need to add security and they are questioning the
effort required and the associated advantages.

Are there any articles or whitepapers which explain the
advantages of a Domain vs Workgroups implementation?

Thanks!

Some advantages of a domain are that security is better
and maintaining user accounts etc is centralized. The
downside is that you will have created a central point of
failure. If you have an onsite admin I would say go with a
domain. If you call someone in when there is a problem or
you outsource support, I would say stay with a workgroup.
A domain will allow you to also set policies for
individuals or groups - you can exclude someone from using
their right mouse key, having access to IE etc. That is a
2 edged sword though, the tighter the security is made the
more you will have requests to make changes - eg., someone
is asked to work on a project but their rights and
permissions won't allow them access to the programs needed
so the admin has to step in to change things. It isn't too
bad if the admin is down the hall and he/she can walk
right over to change things. It is a hassle if it is a 3
day wait to get someone in.

Just my 2 cents worth.
