Workgroup Networking between XP Pro and 2000 Pro

I am trying to setup a network between a Laptop with
Windows XP Pro and a desktop with Windows 2000 Pro. I
have got it setup to the point where on the Laptop with
XP I can see the workgroup and the desktop, but when I
try to access the shared files/printer on the desktop, I
get the following message:
"\\Fred is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The network path is not found"

Meanwhile,on the desktop with 2000 Pro, when I look at
the Workgroup, I can only find the Desktop, the laptop
does not show up.

Any suggestions?

On your XP system, make sure you have NetBT enabled.

1.. Open the Network Connections folder.
2.. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3.. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4.. Click Advanced.
5.. Click WINS.
6.. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.
Even if that doesn't solve your problem, you need it enabled
in order to make F&P sharing work. Also, make sure that the
only firewall that's enabled is either at a router, if you have one,
or at the gateway machine. (See connection properties at the
gateway Internet connection if you're using ICS.)

Ok. I aldready had NetBT enabled. Also, I have Nortan
Internet Security Professional installed on both
machines. I am currently using the laptop to access the
internet, so I turned off the Personal Firewall on the
desktop. Same result. Any other ideas?

Kent,
You wrote: "I turned off the Personal Firewall on the
desktop". You need to disable NIS on the laptop as
well. XP has a firewall built-in, and that's the ONLY
firewall that should be enabled. Note that there are
two connections on your laptop and one on the desk-top.
Of the two on the laptop, ICS and the LAN connection,
only the firewall on the ICS connection should be enabled.

On my two systems, I completely un-installed NIS on both
my machines and installed Norton System Works in its
place. If you're not in the position to do that at this time,
just click on NIS on both machines and click "Disable"...
not just the firewall portion.
