Wordview97 can't read new Word docs

My sister has WinXP (and a newer verison of Word, but not sure which).

I have Win98 and only use wordpad.exe for my docs.

When I needed to read doc files, I used to be able to read all fine but apparently it
can't read newer versions.

Is their a newer version of WordView?
If not, is there some kind of convertor my sister can use on a doc before I get it from
her that make it compatible with Word97?
OR is there another, simple option?

Thanks,
Joe

I still get this error:

"Wordviewer cannot open the document *.doc"

I had my sister resend the document just in case it had gotten corrupted.
Any other ideas? (besides me buying Word and installing that?)

Thanks!
Joe

Are you sure this is a *Word* document she's sending? Some versions of
WordPerfect created files with the .doc suffix.

I'm pretty sure she is using Word XP (or whatever would come on aWin XP equipped new PC)
but I have written to her asking her to tell me exactly what version of Word she is using.

In the meantime, I hit upon a suggestion on the web that said to open a word doc with IE.
So I right-clicked on the file, clicked on open with, chose Internet Explorer and it
opened!

It's weird cuz it IS open in IE. Title bar says - Microsoft Internet Explorer.
BUT there are 2 Helps in the toolbar - you click on 1 Help/About and you get the IE info;
click on the 2nd Help/About and you get Word97 info.
The toolbar has File, Edit, View, Go, Favorites, Help, Help.
When you click on View you get Normal, Online Layout, Page Layout, etc.
It's weird but at least I can finally read the letters!!
Yay!
Any ideas as to why Wordview97 wouldn't work normally but it does in IE?

I'll tell you what version of Word she is using as soon as I hear from her, just for
information and education purposes...
Thanks for sticking with me on this!
Joe

OpenOffice will probibly open it. I works with all microsoft file
formsts.

An estimated 16 million+ people have installed OpenOffice. It's now
used by several Government Agencies including NASA. And it can access
all your microsoft files.

I personally uninstalled Office 2003 last month because I wasn't using
it any longer after installing OpenOffice.

You can get it here http://on-disk.com/product_info.php?products_id=29
on a CD for $3.00

It also works on virtually every type of computer known to man.
