Word's doesn't automatically paste address in label address anymor

Does anyone know why sometimes, when you have an address in a word document
and you click on tools\letters and mailings\envelopes and labels (in Word
2003) or tools\envelopes and labels (in Word 97), Word does not automatically
copy that address to the address field for the label?
This is on various different machines using these versions of Word and does
not happen consistently on the same machine. The insertion point is usually
on or near the address in the document, which seems to help make word behave
properly, but not always. The document type is normally a normal document, or
a mail merge letter.
Any other factors that I may be missing or suggestions?

This behavior has changed between versions. The only really reliable way is to
select the address, copy it, then paste it into the Address box (Ctrl+V). The
various ways different versions of Word use to recognize addresses, that I can
remember, are

- if the current block of text has new lines (shift+Enter)

- a block of text formatted with a specific style, used by the "Letter Wizard"
to indicate the recipient's address

- the current selection (all the lines for the address are selected)

- the information is in a special bookmark (InsideAddress)

but aside from the bookmark, the whole thing is a bit haphazard. A human can
look at a page and recognize a valid address fairly easily. It's a bit more
difficult for a computer program, that lacks a sense of judgement
