Word2000: change company name in properties of new documents

A

Amedee Van Gasse

Hi,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this query, if not
please forgive me. I'll try to give as much information as needed,
please don't be shy to ask if you need to know more.

I'm on a network with approx. 40 Office 2000 installations on Windows
2000 or XP Pro.
Our company name has changed. Old documents don't have to be changed,
but all new documents should have the new company name in the document
properties.

I tried the following:
- applied Knowledge Base article #233499.
- changed the company name in all frequently used templates (*.dot) and
saved them back as templates (*.dot)
- Searched the Windows registry for the old company name and replaced
where appropriate. I know the registry only finds REG_SZ values,
because it didn't find the REG_BINARY value of
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Userinfo\company (regkey
described in KB #233499)
- deleted normal.dot while Word (and all other Office apps) were closed
- changed the company name in normal.dot and saved it again as
normal.dot
- changed the company name in normal.dot using a hex editor :-o
- asked for help on where they
only suggested what I already tried.

Current status:
The new company name is used in all new documents EXCEPT those based on
normal.dot.
Very frustrating indeed...

No thanks in advance, I'll thank you afterwards when I can confirm your
solution works ;-)

Can someone please confirm if it is correct or not that it is
IMPOSSIBLE to change the company name in normal.dot (without
reinstalling Office).

In Office 97 and earlier, you do have to uninstall and reinstall if you
want to change the company name. In Office 2000 and later, you do not.

I'm talking about Office 2000 here.

So, if you say I don not need a reinstall, please give me a procedure
that works for me. KB233499 did not work for normal.dot, only for all
other templates.

The KB article has nothing to do with templates, nor are templates in any
way involved.
Making the changes described by the KB article changes the parameters for
ALL Office 2000 apps.
