I installed Microsoft Word from the Works bundle under my administrator account. My son goes to use it when he logs in under his restricted user account and it won't work for him. He gets an error 1706 message. Setup cannot find the required files. The next dialog box says Problem with shortcut, Fatal error during installation. He has permission to use the program. If I put him in the administrator group, it will run. I un-installed and re-installed, but it made no difference. Why won't Word run with his restricted account?

Maybe you have restrictive access permissions, either in the folder where
the Word executable resides, or in the shortcut. Lifting these restrictions
would fix the problem.

Thanks for your reply, Pegasus. He doesn't have any restrictions to the folder or shortcut. I installed Norton A/V and Encarta the same way and they work fine. When I installed it from the Works CD, it placed a Microsoft Works icon on the desktop and it works fine, just Word won't. And that's the program he needs. Any other suggestions?

You need to find out if the problem is caused by the shortcut, or by
winword.exe itself. Using Explorer or My Computer, navigate to where
winword.exe resides, then invoke it directly. If the messages just flash
past, do the same thing under a Command Prompt.
