Word will not open for me.

When I go to open word the following hattens:
1. I get a box saying "preparing to install"
2. I then get heading "problem with short cut" with the following message
with a red x "This patch product could not be opened. Verify that the patch
product exists ans that you can access it or contact the application vendor
to verify that this es a valid windows installer patch package"
What am I supossed to do? all of the above means nothing to me.
