I'm trying to type some text in a document however, however when I get to the
end of the 1st page, it does not allow me to continue typing. Have I clicked
on something to stop this working or could this be a fault?

This is a known problem.
Go to Format | Columns and click on the preset picture for One, then OK.
If this solves the problem in a given document, and you are experiencing the
same difficulty in all new documents, you'll need to make this same change
in Normal.dot; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for instructions on
how to fix the template.
Hope this helps

Try this: In the Columns dialog box, click the "One" option (under
"Presets"), even if it already appears to be selected. Click OK. If that
works for the current document and the problem also affects all new blank
documents, open the Normal template as a document and repeat the procedure
there. Save and close the template.

To display the Columns dialog box:

- Click Format | Columns (Word 2003).

- Click Page Layout tab | Columns | More Columns (Word 2007).

To open the Normal template, you can search for it in Windows (be sure to
search hidden files and folders), right-click its icon, and choose Open from
the context menu.
