Word takes too long to shutdown

I am using Microsoft Word 2002. It takes almost 45 seconds for the program to
load and almost half that time for the program to shutdown. This happens
whether Word is the only program runing or several programs are in
background. I have ample memory and other Microsoft programs work fine. I
have scanned my system for virus and spyware infections and have a clean
system. Word works fine once it is up and running. The lengthy startup and
shutdown however are a hassle. This problem doesn't exist quite as bad on my
laptop. I don't notice this proglem on the network computers in the office.
Word has been on this computer for about one year. The problem exists for
quite some time but not when first installed. Any ideas?

I checked out all of the solutions in the document you suggested. Nothing
solved the problem. I did discovery something weird, though. I searched the
hard drive several times. There is no normal.dot file to be found anywhere.

Any ideas?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | File Locations, and note the folder
for User Templates. That is where the Normal.dot file will be located.
Normal.dot is a hidden file in Word 2002 and 2003.

OK, I found the normal.dot file and renamed it to .old. Word creadted a
smaller replacement file, but the delay in loading and exiting is still
there. If I uninstalled and then reinstalled, would that solve the problem?

I have the RHD.dot add-on installed. This is the remove hidden data item
provided by Microsoft. I also have customizations added for exit,
next/previous window, close, close all. Does this provide you with any clues?
Thanks for the help.

I've uninstalled RHD and deleted normal.dot. Word created a smaller
normal.dot file but still starts slowly. I have not added any customizations.
Still, word is slow to start and very slow to exit. when I run word with the
/a switch, it loads instantly and closes instantly. the same result occurs
when I load Word in safe mode. But normal load takes forever. I'm really
getting frustrated. I hope you aren't running out of ideas. Thanks for your
efforts so far.

You wrote: "I checked out all of the solutions in the document you
suggested. Nothing solved the problem." Now you write: "when I run word
with the /a switch, it loads instantly and closes instantly." But
starting Word with the /a switch is one of the solutions in the document
I suggested. Please explain.

You wrote: "I also have customizations added for exit, next/previous
window, close, close all." Now you write: "I have not added any
customizations." But these are mutually exclusive statements. Please
explain.

If Word runs properly when started with the /a switch, but not when
started normally, then the problem is in a template or add-in. If there
is more than one Windows user profile on on your computer, then there
could be more than one normal.dot file... make sure you renamed the one
that corresponds to the username you're using.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was that I have removed the RHD and the
normal.dot files. When word restarted, it naturally created a new normal.dot
file. This one does not contain any customizations and there are no adds on
present. I have not recreated the tool customizations that I previously used.
I am the only user on the system so there is no other normal.dot file at
play. I have attempted to remove all previous additions and customizations to
eliminate the cause of the problem.

Word starts instantly and exits instantly when loaded with the /a switch and
when run in safe mode. When he rerun word normally with the plan normal.dot,
the same slowness occurs.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Okay, so it's probably not Normal.dot (since the "plain" Normal.dot is the
same thing you're getting with the /a switch). There could still be other
add-ins (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm), or the
problem could be in the Registry. The fact that there is no problem when you
start in Safe Mode or with the /a switch points to those three areas.

I will check for additional add-ons in the reference article you provided.
Meanwhile, how do I fix or remove the corrupted registry entry? Would
uninstalling Word and then reinstalling it solve the problem?

Thaks for the suggestion. Can you give me the specifc key entry I am deleting
so I don't mess up something else?

Hi,
I have the same problem as yours. It is related to PDFMaker add-ins.
What I did is to
rename:
Hkey_current_machine\software\microsoft\office\word\addins\Pdfmaker.officeaddins to pdfmaker.officeaddins_old (any name you want).
Then start word, it start quickly. Menu and toolbars related to pdf
doesn't appear.
That's fine. It will changed to normal late, as described below.
Then in: tools\macro\security\trusted sources I unchecked "trusted all
installed add-ins and templates".
Exit word.
Change
Hkey_current_machine\software\microsoft\office\word\addins\Pdfmaker.officeaddins_old to its previous name : Pdfmaker.officeaddins.
Open word, it starts up quickly. Then change security to previous state.
Exit word and open again. it starts up quickly again. I tried it many times.
Now word open quickly.
Hope it help.

I'm new to this newsgroup, so I ask your indulgence if I should be posting
somewhere else.
This thread sounds like it is addressing the same problem I have. However, I
tried to rename the template "normal.dot" but I can't find it. I find
"manual.dot" and a whole bunch of others, but not that one. Is that, in fact,
the name of it? It's not in the template folder, nor does a general search
*.dot bring it up.

Thanks much,
Paul

Normal.dot is not in the same folder with the templates that ship with Word.
It will be in the folder specified for user templates on the File Locations
tab of Tools | Options. For more on how to locate Normal.dot, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm
