I keep my files index in a Word Table. The first column
is my file numbers, etc. A-1, A-2, etc. When I get to A-
100, it sorts it after A-10, rather than after A-99. Does
anyone know how I can adjust this so it will sort my files
in alph-numeric order? Thanks. I'd appreciate it if you
would email me at (e-mail address removed) as well as post
your replies. Thanks Monica

Provided all the 'numbers' begin with A then you can sort by number
descending which will put them in the order you want, but if there are other
letters then you will have to sort by text to get the letters in order then
select all the As and sort by number descending - then B then C etc.

Hi Monica,

It's pretty easy if you know the trick.
In "Table > Sort > Options", enter a hyphen in "Separate fields at >
Other".

Now sort the table once. This won't achieve much, but Word has to analyze
your table.

Once that has happened, you can set:
Sort by: Column 1
Using: Field 2
Type: Number

"Field 2" is the stuff that follows the (first) hyphen, and since you have
identified that as a number, Word will sort properly.
If you had B-14 etc, too, you would need to first sort by Column 1, using
Field 1, Type text.

Regards,
Klaus
