word tables resizing

We have a lengthy table that is used across several pages as a checklist.
I've 'unchecked' "automatically resize to fit contents" so that the table
stays the same width, but gets longer as the wording in the Comments section
increases.
However, in several rows, we've had to 'split' the cells because there are 2
pieces of information that need to be separate answers. Because of this, if
the table does get messed up, the split cells now are 'outside' of the normal
size of the table... like it's added an additional column to the right.

Is there anyway to get this all to line back up the way it's supposed to be?
Currently I've had to go in and adjust the columns manually, but sometimes
even then they won't go into the position where I want them.

Have you tried setting "Auto Fit" to a fixed column width?

Thanks Cindy, but what's the difference between 'automatically resize to fit
contents' and 'auto fit'? Maybe that's where I'm confused.

AutoFit is a command on the Tables menu. It has several options, one of
which is "Fixed Column Width," which is what you want. I believe it is
equivalent to disabling "Automatically resize to fit contents" in Table
Options.

The "Automatically resize..." option just prevents columns from resizing
as you enter contents in them; column widths can still be set relative
to the "container," meaning that columns will resize if (say) you change
the document margins.

Table | AutoFit | Fixed Column Width not only turns off the
"Automatically resize..." option but also sets fixed column widths (in
inches or centimeters).
