Word 2003 on my fast new AMD 3500 is very, very slow to open a Word file when
I click on the file name directly.
However, when I open the file from within Word it is very fast.

Please help.

There are some options.

You might consider confirming your Firewall settings, to make sure they have
not been altered. Then run a full scan, and check for "worms". There might
be other reasons for this lack of speed, that require updating a driver, but
the security check can rule out the possibility of certain corruption, and
further damage. Parasites are also known to cause this problem, because some
overwrite files. Active X can sometimes lapse into overwriting files. There
are Knowledge Base articles available to workaround it. Manually deleting
overwritten files is impossible, because the process is so rapid and massive,
that one cannot keep up. One also risks deleting vital files, by accident.
Removing them, might require the purchase of a software designed to quickly
delete the overwriting, without harming your operating system. These are new
spyware related software products. Still, check with your Firewall first,
because sometimes they have the same feature.
