Word should put two spaces between the state and zip.

I currently use Word 2003. No version of Word has ever acknowledged that two
spaces between the state and zip code in an address block is grammatically
correct. Now with Word 2003, specifically the mail merge that now
automatically generates the address block only includes one space between
state and zip, which is not grammatically correct. There are always two
spaces between the state and the zip code.

To whose rules of grammar do you refer? I am sincere in my request.

AFAIK the 2-space convention is arbitrarily imposed by the USPS, predicated
on the optical readers used for automated sorting of mail. As with most of
their requirements (i.e., positioning of delivery & return addresses), this
one is subject to change at any time.

D-Fox, I have to disagree with you completely on this. There is absolutely
no truth to the statement that two spaces is "gramatically correct" (not
that there's any grammar involved, but that's a minor quibble).

The US Postal Service Domestic Mail Manual goes into excruciating detail
about what constitutes a correctly addressed piece of mail. Section 602
covers addressing (http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/602.htm) and Section 708
covers technical details (http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/708.htm). Nowhere
in that blindingly boring document does it say anything about the number of
spaces between state and zip code, whether one, two, or a dozen.

If you want to put in two spaces, fine, do it. Nobody's stopping you.
