Word should not display a gray desktop after closing documents.

After closing documents, Word displays a depressing, "gray" desktop; why? It
should instead display a "white" desktop, meaning that Word's ready for the
user to start/create a new document. This would save me time by not having
to click with the mouse on the New Blank Document icon.

The "gray desktop" you find depressing indicates you do not have a document
open. The white screen you want is NOT a "desktop." It is a new document.
Think of it as having a gray metal desk and lots of white paper. If
something white is covering the gray metal, that means you have a piece of
paper out that you can write on. If you can see the top of the desk, that
means you have put all your papers away. If you want to write something new,
you don't want to start writing on the gray metal desktop -- you either pull
out a new piece of paper and write on it, or you pull out an old piece of
paper and add something to it.
