Word seems lost for a long time when inserting picture from file

New computer and using same version of windows and office. New computer
takes forever to open folder to insert a picture from it. After I do this
once in a word session multiple inserts of picture from file go quick. Any
ideas? Using Office 2003 on a Windows XP laptop.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop or in the
Windows Start menu, left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and
disconnect any mapped drives that are not currently available.

No joy, I have no network drives viewable by a right click on my computer and
then a disconnect network drive.
I do have several network places - all of which work just fine.

No joy with this. When I right click on my computer and thrn left click on
disconnect network drive it says "there are on network drives to disconnect".
I do have several network places in my network places and they all work just
fine.
