Word: Saves Multiple Copies of Same Document

Hi,
I am using Word 2002 on Windows XP. When I save a
document there are many copies of the same document
saved...as much as 80 copies of the same document. Why is
this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
This sounds like the effect of a virus to me.
