word not showing pictures

In a word document that has pictures, the pictures are not showing up when I
open the document, unless I view the document in reading layout. Does anyone
know why? or how to get around it?

I'm a using Office 2003 with the latest updates under xp professional.

From the Tools menu, select Options and make sure that you do not have the
"Picture placeholders" box checked.
