Word links don't work (for long)

Hi,

I'm using MS Word 2002 sp3 (came with Works Suite 2006) on a Vista computer.
At some point I will get Word 2007, but until then...

I've noticed that links that I make between documents cease to work after
awhile. I hover over the link and it shows something like
"users\...appData\appData\appData..."
I've edited them to correct the path, but still in another week they don't
work again! Does anyone know why? Could it be due to some
cleaning/maintenance I do regularly?

Oftentimes the word "roaming" is present in the non-functioning link.
