Word in Office XP crashes on startup

Word in Office XP crashes on startup (as does notepad). I've deleted the
normal template and then rebooted to no avail. Uninstalling and reinstalling
Word had no impact either.

Any suggestions please?

The fact that Notepad also crashes suggests that the problem may have
nothing to do with Word. If after working through
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm. there is no
improvement, try updating the display driver and the printer driver and
maybe consider that you have a hardware related problem.
