I have created an online survey as a form in Word 2003. When it is emailed
back to me as an attachment, I copy and paste it into another programme, for
instance, notepad. Instead of the x in the checkboxes it changes it to a 1
and if nothing is added, then 0 is printed. Is there anyway to change this
to print an x and remove the 0 from copying if the field is blank?

1 and 0 indicate true and false in many situations (except when -1 is used
instead.)

Rather than paste into notepad, you could connect the form to a database and
compile the information there. See
http://www.mousetrax.com/TechPage.html#autoforms and pay special attention
to Dian's series "Please fill out this form". Part 5 demonstrates
connecting the form to a database.
