Word file saving on top of itself.

Hi. I have a word file approx. 5,700 kb in size. I made changes to the file,
saved them, then ran a new TOC and saved the file again. The first time, the
file size varied by only a few kb. But, after running the new TOC and saving,
the saved file doubled in size to over 11,000 kb. When the larger file is
opened, there are no visible reasons for the larger size (i.e., no added
pages, text, etc.). I deleted the TOC, ran a new one, and saved the file
again. This time, the file size increased to over 16,700 kb - the file saved
the original 5,700 on top of itself again. Has any one encountered this
problem? And a fix? Thanks!

Turn off the Fast Saves feature. Tools > Options > Save
This should never be turned on.

Charles, thank you so much for reply to this so qickly - I just checked, and
I don't have the Fast Saves feature selected; would the problem occur if
someone uses the feature, and then I work with their file?

Would having "Embed Smart Tags" selected cause it do you think?

No, Fast Saves is not a document setting but a system setting. Another
possible cause is "versions," which is document specific. You can find the
versions setting under the File menu.

Embed Smart Tags could cause file bloat, but I would be surprised at it
causing what you are seeing. (I turned it off on my system so am not aware
of potential problems. I didn't use the tags and the purple lines annoyed
me.)

If the versions feature isn't the cause, try creating a new blank document
and copying all of your original document into the new one - except for the
last paragraph mark. See what happens with that.

OK, thanks, Charles, I'll try these two things and see if they work. One
thing I did notice is when I saved edits to it prior to running a new TOC,
the "diskette" icon in the status bar activated; then, when I ran the new TOC
and saved, "Saving" and the activity string displayed in the status bar
instead of the "diskette" icon, and the file size bloated. That led me to
think that it was something to do with the TOC; but it's not doing it with
every document, so it must be something embeded. Weird!
