Word Field Codes Table of Contents (TC)

G

George Kobernus

No matter what I do I can't seem to get the Field code
table of contents entry to take. The help says to insert a
TC field immediately before the text you want to include
in the contents. When I do this it does not show up in the
Table of contents when I run the "insert table of
contents" routine.

Every thing else seems to work OK. I've gotten indexing to
work but this TC thing has me stimied.

Hi, George,

Press Alt+F9 to display the TOC field code, and add the \f switch so the
result looks something like this:

{ TOC \o "1-3" \f \h \z \u }

In the future, when you're in the Insert > Table of Contents dialog, click
the Options button and check the box for "Table entry fields". Then the
dialog will build a field with the \f switch.

The reason for all this is that Word can build TOCs from built-in heading
styles, from outline levels, from TC fields, or from any combination of the
three. The default from the dialog uses only headings 1 through 3 and
outline levels, but ignores TC fields.

You can get more about the field switches from the Help by searching for
"TOC field switches", and you can read
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm.
