Word exits when last file closes

I'm using close on the file drop down menu and Word 2003 has suddenly started
to exit when the last file is closed. What have I done? It is also starting
in normal view instead of print view.

If you hold down CTRL when starting Word, to use Safe Mode, does Word behave
more as you expect it should? If yes, what "tools" have you downloaded or
installed recently to work with Word?
