I am unable to open a word document created on my desktop & transferred to
cd rom. When I try to open the file on my laptop useing word (version 7.0)
the message There is not enough memory to open file D:\ .appears . There are
no other programmes running. The file will open useing Word Pad but is all
mixed up. Desktop has word 2000.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks Tommy

Try copying it back to hard-disk and then opening it. Word opens a *.tmp
file for each open *.doc it could be that which is causing a problem.

First off, (are you copying a shortcut and not the *.doc itself ?....I have
had people do that in the past), ...check the properties of the *.doc after
you've copied it back to hard-disk and remove the read-only flag if set.
Though that shouldn't prevent you opening it.

i.e. you may have burnt a shortcut to cd-r and not the document itself. In
the future you may like to right-click the shortcut to get its' pop-out menu
| left-click properties, note the actual storage location of the *.doc file,
and then in your burning software navigate to the *.doc's actual location to
select it and burn it to cd-r.

The laptop is only 18mths old & I would have thought that "word" would have
been recent enought to process a simple file like the one that I am trying
to use.Not sure what update I should download from the list .?

Regardless of how old the laptop is, Word 7 is a very old version. The
current version is Word 11.

You said you had Word 7.
That is hardly recent as it is around 9 years old. (It came stand
alone or with Office 97)

Is that really what you have?
Check the version and try the Office group.

I could probably find out what version of Word comes with Works 7.0
but surely it is easier for you to look in Word?
It will show when you start it or in Word-Help-About
