word docs change to word pad

All of a sudden when I save a word document as a word.doc
it is being saved as a word pad file. How do I get word
back like it was. I do not know what I did to make it
change but all of my former word documents now show as
word pad. Thank you.

The file association for DOC has gone awry - they are still Word documents.
Re-register Word by starting it from Windows > start > run with the command
Winword /r
