Word doc opens in design

What do you mean "design mode"? Word is a word processor. It's purpose
is to work with (change) documents. Are you saying you don't want to be
able to make changes? Why not use the Word Viewer program, available
for free for download from Microsoft.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Dave,

It sounds like you are trying to create a form using the controls from the
Control Toolbox. When your document opens, the "Design" toolbar opens,
doesn't it? Hate to say it, but you would be much better served using the
formfields on the Forms toolbar and protecting your form. There is a great
tutorial by Dian Chapman on this page:

If this is not what you are having problems with, sorry, but you'll still
learn a lot about forms! HA!

The document has checkmarks in it and when it opens, the
control toolbar design mode is active. You have to click
it off to make the checkmarks work.

If you mean that you see a small toolbar with a picture of
drafting tools, this can occur if your document contains
form fields and your security setting is High, or if it is
Medium and you choose to disable macros. Go to Tools >
Macros > Security and change the setting to low to
eliminate the messages entirely. I prefer to use up-to-
date virus protection rather than relying on MS to make
the decision for me, or having the program ask me to make
a choice based on no information. If there is a use for
the design symbol showing up I cannot figure it out. Most
users do not know what to do with the thing.
