After burning a Word doc to a cd when I take this cd to another computer it
only allows me to view it in a read format and I can't make any changes to
the doc. Any idea's?

copy the doc to the hard drive and open it from there.

Unless you're using packet-writing software and an appropriately formatted
CD, it's not possible to do what you want to do. A CD isn't like magnetic
media (floppies and hard drives). What you can do, using multi-session
burning, which XP does by default, is copy the file(s) in question to the
host computer's hard drive, edit them and then burn them back to the CD, or
another CD.
