Word defaults to Arabic

My Format Font screen shows both "Latin Text Fonts" and "Complex Scripts" along with the Preview Screen showing "Sample" and then (I am assuming) the word "Sample" in Arabic! If you select a word the preview screen does not reflect that selection.

How do I get back to the normal Word (Office Professional XP) format font in US English. I have tried the following.

1) Setting the language in Windows XP to English
2) Setting the language in Word to English
3) Repairing Word with the install disk.
4) Deleting Office entirely and reinstalling.
5) Spent hours in the Microsoft tech support literature.

Norton does not indicate any virus.

Can anyone help me?
