Word conflict?

Not exactly a new user, but can't see a more suitable ng for this query. I
have XP Home which came with Works 6 but not Word. I have also installed
Works 4.5 and both versions work fine.
I have installed Word from my Office97SBE disk, and it usually works fine.
But sometimes when using Word it slows the entire machine. Ctrl+Alt+Del,
selecting Winword (using about 16K memory) and 'end process' usually solves
this problem. It seems like some kind of conflict. Any suggestions on how to
avoid this happening, and still use my existing version of Word. (Can't
afford to purchase Word 2000).

You can download the latest version of Office for free from
http://www.openoffice.org.

I don't know where you get your information, but this is *NOT* MS Office
with Word!

No, it's definitely not Microsoft Office. But Open Office does provide a
wordprocessor that has much of Word's functionality and can produce output in
Word format. It is really Star office without the official support, that's
why it's free.
It isn't quite as user friendly as Word, but it does have some advantages.
You can save in most formats and it can often open files that Word can't
open. I use it for troubleshooting complex legal documents - I can often save
the text in an rtf file format from OO whereas Word won't open the file, or
crashes on opening.

Horses for courses really. OO has its uses, but I don't think I would use it
all day every day. But if you're short of money, it's free to download, and
learning to use it won't do you any harm!

I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing OO. I've never used it, although
I might some day. I just didn't want someone to be mislead into thinking
they were going to get a free download of *MS* Office. That would be a big
surprise as a result of a poorly-phrased response.

True. Personally I only ever use it for troubleshooting damaged files. But
there are some big organisations who are using it nowadays. A developer
friend had a contract to recreate custom templates in Open Office for a
police force, they had a budget cut and decided not to use MS software for
documents any more as the licences cost so much. Don't know how longsighted
that decision will prove to be though. :-S

Thanks for the replies guys. I've downloaded that OpenOffice and it seems to
run nice and smoothly. It appears more versatile than Word. Certainly worth
a trial - especially at that price! Maybe it will solve my problem.

I never said is was *MS* Office, so strictly speaking I wasn't telling
a lie.

If one says "Office", one means a combination or suite of a word
processor, a spreadsheet, presentation software and perhaps some other
productivity tools like a database or a PIM.

People should be smart enough to know that OpenOffice is not MS Office.

But some are clearly not smart enough to note that this is a forum for
Microsoft Word, so reference to Open Office here is irrelevant .:(

Point well taken.

However I don't see you making this comment every time someone in this
newsgroup asks a question about WordPerfect. ;-)

Also, and please verify this if you can, I have tried to only make a
reference to OpenOffice whenever people ask how to do something that is
not possible with Microsoft Word, either because feature X or Y does
not exist in Microsoft Word but does in OpenOffice, or because they
might expect something to be free when in fact it costs a lot of money,
or they are trying to do something that could be considered a breach of
the license or otherwise illegal.

What question were you asking about OpenOffice?

Graham,

You posted a reply, but added no text.
Did a slippery mouse or keyboard trick you into doing this? ;-)
