Word closes when I close a file

Why does Word close when I close a file using the small close icon on the
tool bar(bottom top right)
 
Try resetting the Close button:

Tools > Customize, select the Toolbars tab and check ONLY the Standard
toolbar (uncheck all others). Now, right click on the Close button and
select Reset. Then close the Customize dialog box.

Restore your other toolbar(s) by clicking View > Toolbars.

Check you close Word, you may be asked if you want to save your changes to
the global template Normal.dot. Say "Yes".
