Word bolding whole document instead of the selected text

I have a word document that is not working right when I bold sections of
text. I can bold one word or a whole section and Word will bold the whole
documents along with the header and footer. When i hit the undo button just
what i want bolded is bolded. This is a real pain when you are formatting a
large document and sometimes the undo button does not undo all the bad stuff
and the line spacing is not the same. not sure what i did to the document to
make it work like this but hopefully someone has had this problem before and
knows how to fix it. I have also pasted the text into a new document and
still the same problem

I am using Word 2003
