Word autoformat problem after update

After I downloaded an update a couple of weeks ago, Word started acting crazy. When I selected part of a document to change the formatting in any wa--centering it, switching fonts or even making it bold--after a minute-long delay Word would change the selected section and also everything else in the document! I discovered I could go to edit and select "Undo autoformatting," and it would change everything back. At least most of the time. Very, very frustrating....
At first I thought it was me, but a computer person checked it out and said it was an intentional change from update. I can't imagine why.
Can anyone help?!
