word 97 won't open old documents

After a recent server upgrade from NT to 2003 server we
can no longer access certain old word 97 documents that
are stored on a mapped drive. Any suggestions?
 
there is no error message it just takes forever or doesn't
open at all. I use ctrl-alt-del to end the task, which
closes word & then when I open word again it says part of
this file may be recovered-attempt file recovery now.
