word 97 - spell checking in another language

R

Robert M Jones

Win 98SE, with an UK English version of Word 97 (Office SR2b with latest
recent updates), but am typing a document in Bulgarian, Cyrillic script.
The normal default language for normal.dot is English United Kingdom.

I have Bulgarian keyboard set in Windows using international settings
(Control Panel - Keyboard - Add language - use hotkey to shift from
English to Bulgarian).

The language is set in the document as Bulgarian (Tools - Language) - If
I close the document and reopen it, and then check the language set via
Tools - Language, it shows Bulgarian as the selected language.

I have no problem typing/displaying the Cyrillic.

The spellchecker does not seem to be able to pick up spelling mistakes -
if I just type a set of letters randomly the spellchecker finds no
mistakes.

Is there something else I need to download or adjust please or is it
just not possible to spellcheck in another language?

Many thanks.

Word allows you to mark your document text with any one of dozens of
languages (and adds more to that list with every release). Unfortunately
while you can mark the text thus, it doesn't mean that Word has matching
proofing tools installed. You may have to buy additional tools, or there
simply may not be any available for your language.

Additional spell-checkers from Microsoft are no longer available for
versions of Office before Office XP. For Office 2003, for example, there is
the Office 2003 Proofing Tools CD
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/language/proofingtools.mspx.

Do you have the Bulgarian proofing tools installed? The English version of
Word comes with proofing tools for English (all flavors), French, and
Spanish. In order to get other languages, you need to buy the Proofing Tools
package for your version of Word (which includes all the languages, I
believe).

English Word 97 doesn't contain any other language's proofing tools. The
additional tools were introduced in Office 2000.
