I can open any document in Word'97 and click >file>save
as, and can type in a file name, but it will only save as
a single letter or number (the first character typed).
What did I mess up? and How can I fix it?
TIA

Sounds like something is interferring with the Office program (perhaps
modified the file save as dialog box program). Have you checked your
machine for computer virus/worm/spy-bot programs? Clean?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Did full scan with NAV - clean. I have removed all office
programs, rebooted, and installed again thinking the same
thing, perhaps some part of the program was corrupted, but
did not fix the problem. How do I find spy-bot? Would
not my firewall prevent something like that from loading?

This problem occurs when Word is set to (Windows 95) compatibility mode in
Windows XP. Instructions from Office MVP Beth Melton for correcting this:

To rectify:

- Locate WinWord.exe
- Right-click and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- See if you have a Compatibility Mode set
- If set remove the tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode"

Wow, thanks. That did it. Imagine something so simple
could cause such consternation among a group of
engineers. ;)
