MS Word 5.5 for dos word processor -is legal abadonware by MS:

"Microsoft Word 5.5 for MS-DOS is a complimentary upgrade for customers
of Microsoft Word 5.0 for MS-DOS. If you intend to use Word 5.0 for MS-
DOS in the year 2000 and beyond, we recommend that you upgrade to Word
5.5 for MS-DOS before December 31, 1999."

AFAIK, Microsoft never released it as freeware.

Well, you can't tell that by THIS link, can you?

In fact it is free to download and a very strange "upgrade". It's
supposed to upgrade V. 5.x to V.5.5 but, it is a nearly complete
install of Word 5.5. Microsoft is aware of the fact and when the
question was brought up in MS groups steve_b said "we don't care what
you do with it". So, there you are. It's not quite complete but, if
you search around the few missing pieces are available at
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/
