Hi I'm working on 5 parts to a document, all with the same page layout and
their own table of contents. Each time I try to merge them into the same
document the numbering continues from the previous.
It won't let me restart numbering for each part.
in 2003 I could usually just paste the separate docs in and it wouldn't
effect the numbering.
Help would be much appreciated.

Are you inserting section breaks between the parts? You can't restart page
numbering without a section break.

Hi Seana,

If all you need to do is the create a common ToC for the documents:
1. create a new document
2. input the title of the first document/chapter
3. insert a TOC field
4. insert an RD field pointing to the first document (see Word's help file for info on how to do this)
5. repeat steps 2 - 4 for each of the remaining documents
