I use "insert picture" a lot and each time I use it it opens at the start
default loction (i.e. picture file) not the previously opened folder. I
understand that it would do this for the first time of opening something, but
why does it keep going back to the first folder? Tried changing the default
location which got me a bit nearer but since every project has a different
folder it means changing the default location each time I start a new
project. (I am pretty sure it didn't use to do this).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are two ways to accomplish this:

1. You can delete the default location. Although you may be told that you
can do this (in earlier versions) by just deleting the path on the File
Locations tab of Tools | Options, I can't find a comparable setting in Word
2007, and in any case I believe this has to be done through the Registry.

a. Open the Registry (Start | Run: regedit) and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options.

b. Right-click on the PICTURE-PATH entry and choose Modify.

c. Clear the path from the entry and click OK.

2. If you prefer not to edit the Registry, you can add any frequently used
folder to the Places Bar.
