Word 2007 and Powerpoint 2007 "close window" button

Has anyone else had an issue with not having a "close window" button in Word
2007 and Powerpoint 2007? I wondered if my software didn't install correctly
or if this feature was eliminated. I'm referring to the "x" button in the
upper right hand corner used to close single documents, not the one used to
completely close the Word or Powerpoint application. Excel 2007 still has
this feature.
Thanks.

You don't really close individual documents anymore. Each file you have open
will open in a separate window. So, the X in the very top right does close
the individual document. If you have several documents open, closing one
should not close all of them.

So there is not a good way to close your last document and leave Word 2007
open (with no document open) without going to the menu or shortcut on the
left top of the screen?

Thanks so much.

In each program click the Options button, click the "Word Options" or
"PowerPoint Options" button at the bottom of the dropdown, click the
Advanced tab, and look in the Display group.

If the option "Show all windows in the Taskbar" is checked, each
document has its own window, each one gets a separate button in the
Windows Taskbar, and each one has only a single X button that closes
only that document. Closing the last document also closes the program.

If that option is not checked, then all the documents are displayed in
a single window, there's only one button in the Taskbar, and each
document has its own small X button. Closing the last document leaves
the program running with an empty window.

Excel has different behavior, as you noted.

That option is grayed out. Is there a simple way to change it or is that a
registry change?

Thanks,

It shouldn't be grayed out, and I don't know what would cause that.
Possibly a munged registry entry. A lot of the 2007 stuff is still new
enough that we don't know yet how it breaks.

In the meantime, you can still close individual windows with the
Ctrl+W shortcut or with the Office Button > Close item.

I believe if you have a document file open then it will not be grayed
out. If you just have Word open without a document file open then it
is grayed out. At least that is how mine worked.
