Word 2003

I am currently using Microsoft XP and have never had a problem with Microsoft
Word 2003 untill recently. When I highlight a paragraph or a word in this
document and press backspace it used to delete the word however now when I do
that, it just takes off the highlight and the cursor goes to the start of the
first word of the paragraph or word highlighted. It is really becoming
frustrating as I have tried to change the settings but am not sure how or
what to do? please help

Press the Insert key on your keyboard. You probably touched it
accidentally when you were deleting something.

thankyou grammatim for your help but the insert button is not the problem.
still looking for other possible suggestions

Tools > Options > Edit > Check 'Typing replaces selection'
