Word 2003 spell checker not working

hey gang - got a funky one. have any of you come across a situation where
Word does not catch a misspelled word on ANY computer the file is open on?

Machines: Mine and two users
Word: 'caustioned'
Symptom: no red squiggle, not caught when F7 or >Tools >Spelling is run

Already Checked:
-Setting in >Tools>Spelling & Grammar, "Check spelling as I'm typing" is on;
"Only recommend from main" is off
-Checked both Custom dictionaries on all machines - not found in there.
-checked all AutoText & Auto Correct entries - not there.
-checked >Tools>Lanhuage>Set - set for English withthe spellchecker icon
next to it.

The document was JUSt started yesterday, no special merges or fields -
straight typing.
What am I missing?

PS: My OLK Spelling caught it!!!

Select just the word, then go to Tools | Language | Set Language and see if
"Do not check spelling or grammar" is checked. This option can be set for
selections down to a single letter, I think.

I already checked that. That's why I'm so confused.

Has the word been flagged as valid (Ignore in spell checker)? Make sure you
recheck the whole document (Tools > Options > Spelling and Grammar (tab)).
