Word 2003 - spell check maxed out?

M

mdavison

I have a client with a 400+ page document. The "display spelling errors as I
type" tool has ceased to dispay the red squiggly lines. At one point he
reported a message to the effect of "There are too many errors to report",
but did not send me a screen shot of the message. I am also unclear as to
whether or not he has any service packs loaded.

Has anyone heard of this - too many pages to Spell check?

Thanks in advance.

This is not uncommon in long documents containing many names, and it may be
more common if you have less RAM or a smaller hard drive (less room for Word
to swing the cat). You can still spell-check manually, but "Check spelling
as you type" is turned off. I usually deal with this problem by some
combination of (a) adding words to the custom dictionary and (b) applying a
"no proofing" style to other words or paragraphs. For more on this, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/MasterSpellCheck.htm#ExemptingText. For
instructions on creating a character style, see the first part of
