Word 2003 shuts down

G

WinXP, Office 200
I've been using for a couple of months now, no problems. Yesterday I get the freeze and the message "Microsoft Word has to close now, send an error report ..." I have deleted temp files, renamed normal.dot, nothing has worked. The crash comes after about 10 minutes or so. I am able to recover my document. I have disabled office workups in Norton. The only thing different that I have done recently is set up a firewall. Could this have anything to do with the crashes

Thanks for any answers anyone has.

Try the troubleshooting tips at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm; they're applicable
to many problems using and closing Word as well as opening.

Office workups? It's the Office plug-in that needs to be disabled in Norton.
Crashes like this are often caused by unruly add-ins. You didn't mention
those?
I cannot imagine what a firewall could be adding that would cause such a
problem.

Graham,
I edited the registry. I did Detect and Repair. I'm still getting the green and red squigglies before I finish typing the words. Word crashed after about two sentences this time. What next? :)

I am now completely bemused. I have no idea where to direct you further.

I REALLY did not want to hear you say that!

Here are some other thoughts of mine, FWIW.:) I have been working in Word for the past 30 to 45 minutes, no crashes, nothing. I opened up a blank document and started typing.

The documents that I continue to crash with are documents that are created from a specific template that was transferred over from my old computer. When I went through the corrupted template section, I created a new normal.dot. I thought that any new document created from these specific templates would be using the new normal template. Am I totally confused about templates? Could these old templates be the problem?

Thanks again for all the help you are giving me!!

Thanks, but again no luck

I created a new normal.dot, then created a new report template based on the new normal.dot. Once again, ten minutes into typing my report, Word stops responding, then shuts down.

Anything else you can think of before I call Microsoft and go the paid support route?

No - I was already clutching straws. Apart from oddities like defective
screen and printer drivers which Word is tied into, we seem to have covered
everything I can think of.
Stick around here in case someone else has any ideas.

I'm still exploring what's going on with my problem. Some further reading pointed me to a possible culprit -- WinFax Pro. I installed an old version (9.0) a couple of weeks ago. While reading in the Knowledge Base, i came across an article that states XP needs version 10.02. I posted a question to Microsoft Online Support, so I'll let you know what I hear. I did uninstall the program and typed three pages into a Word document and no shutdown. I'm hoping this is my problem.

I thought we had discussed add-ins way back in the thread? Add-ins can be
problematical and WinFax's is particularly dreadful - and unnecessary.
Remove the Winfax add-in from the startup folder.

Yes, we did discuss add-ins, and I went through the steps to check both sources -- there was nothing listed in either place. I have deleted the program altogether and will see what the fax program that comes with XP is all about. Thanks again for your expertise.

Just thought I would update this ..
I'm into day two with MS tech support and still no issues resolved. Uninstalled WinFax Pro on Friday, then went through all steps again -- updated printer drivers, checked start-ups, disabled Norton, edited registry, etc. Got an error msg. in explorer.exe last night, so will explore that today when tech support calls. Still getting the shutdown in Word. Maybe someday this brand new computer of mine will work properly :)

I think your smiley was upside down ;)
Please let us know if MS can resolve this.

Thought I would give an update, such as it is ..

I'm now on my fifth (I believe) tech person. I have gone through all the steps I went through from the advice here, and then some -- new templates, edited registry, etc. I have worked entirely in Safe mode. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003. I have created a new user account and worked from that. Word still shuts down. I am sick to death of tech support -- don't get me wrong, very nice people, I'm just sick of not solving the problem

My current tech person is passing me "up the chain," as he puts it. He doesn't know what else to do. I don't know what they will try next, maybe issues in Windows. Luckily my old Win98 computer still is up and running, and allows me to get my work done. I guess I will talk to them on Tuesday since it's a holiday weekend here. I've been back and forth with MS since May 14th. Did I mention I'm sick of tech support

Hopefully I will have some answers to post here soon!

Hope you don't have the same problem I did. I got a brand new Gateway
P4 about a year ago. From the beginning, I couldn't get Word to run
right on it. I never called Microsoft tech support, but I tried most of
the stuff you mentioned, plus I replaced the RAM on the motherboard.
After about a month of messing with it, I sent it back to Gateway and
they replaced the the motherboard and CPU. Voila, problem fixed (except
Gateway replaced my P4 with a Celeron, so I sent it back again and now
I'm on my third motherboard/CPU).
