word 2003 opens slow, possible invalid registry entry

i have office 2003 installed on a computer that uses an XP operating system
with multiple user profiles. word does not open correctly on one of these
profiles. i have manipulated registry entries for current user and when i try
to refix these it does not work. i have tried to reinstall from disk with
uninstalling and this did not work. i think i need to completely reinstall.
do i need to reinstall? if i uninstall office and delete all registry
entries, will i lose additional templates that i have downloaded?

To answer your last question, first: reinstalling Word should not delete any
*.doc or *.dot files. It will remove the standard templates installed with Word
(Fax, etc.), but shouldn't affect anything else.

But before you go that route, have you tried Help/Detect and Repair?

Have you also made sure that there aren't any addins installed in this profile
that may be slowing down the initialization of the application?

I have run detect and repair, but noyhing happened.

There are no add ins on this profile.

Word MUST have a copy of Normal.dot in order to run. If it can't find one, it
generates a new copy. It might not save it, however, if no customizations were made.
So this temp file is expected behavior.

I'd say: try creating a brand new user profile for this user. If it's "good" then
transfer the user's settings to it and delete the bad profile.

I have already started a new user profile. Just trying to fix that one.
Both the normal.dot and ~$Normal exist even after making customizations.

As long as Word is running, you'll always see a tempfile (the second of the
two you list) in the same folder with a loaded template or opened document.
This is perfectly natural.

Yes I can delete the temp file when word is closed, but it just reappears after I start word again.
