word 2003 - locked documents

The message 'this modification is not allowed because the document is locked'
has suddenly started to apply to all existing docs on my PC and because of it
I also can't create any new docs. There is no indication that Word (a
component of Office 2003)is not activated. I have a lot of urgent work to do,
especially on existing docs (all of which I have created myself, and have
never had any need to lock them). How do I get Word back to full function
please? I have tried the Help solutions without success.

Thanks, but as I said in my original message I have already tried the
activation possibilty without success

Well... actually you didn't say that you already tried the activation
possibility. You merely said that 'there is no indication that Word ... is
not activated.' That can be taken in different ways and I took it the same
way Drew did. :-)

Have you made sure that the files aren't read-only? Right click on one of
your word documents and select properties. Make sure that Read-only isn't
checked. I doubt this is the problem, as you said even new documents are
locked, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

How long have you had the computer? Was Office supplied with it?.. is Office
a Trial version?..

Danny,

I believe there is an activation issue, something preventing your activation
process.
When I select 'Help > Activate Product', I receive the message 'This product
has already been activated'.

If you are not receiving this message, I highly doubt your activation
process is working correctly. I have read several postings with your problem
where the person has tried the
'Help > Activate Product' route but receive no message at all.

I believe you are in the 'reduced-functionality mode' (see '293151 link).

Have you tried this fix:

Have you tried going to 'Add/Remove Programs, select 'Microsoft Office 2003'
& click 'Change' > Select the 'Reinstall or repair' option?

Same thing here. After three years of use, three days ago Office pops up
with "Activate now?" After Office does its activation thingy, all is okay,
but before then all manner of features (such as "properties" in Outlook)
were disabled.

Have you asked the experts in the office / word newsgroups?
Troll? Isn't that what your mother raised?

Joey0101,

I am confused as to what your response references and why it was made 30
days after the original posting/set of responses that seem to be in the part
of the thread you are replying to.

I am sure you have a reason to attack 'danny o'b' or 'Tom Willett' - but I
must be missing that reason in this thread/part of it. Can you enlighten
me?
